A twist on tradition.
“Breaking the Mold is the motto that inspires us every day. Thinking out of the box can be a provocative motivation for innovation, which, a priori, implies many things, but certainly does not sound traditional. However, if tradition means preserving ideas, innovation means materialising new ideas that could become traditions… Moreover, traditions are not set in stone, they should be reviewed and updated. In this sense, after a decade of Sancal’s illustrated calendar, perhaps we should start talking about tradition.
And, contrary to appearances, tradition is a very important word for Sancal. We have turned 50 and are well aware that the company would not have become what it is today without the local community and founding family. To honour tradition and celebrate a creative decade of which I feel tremendously proud, what’s better than having an in-house and a member of the family. Elena Castaño-López is not only the Art Director of Sancal (and my dear sister), but she is also the illustrator of a year full of anniversaries. With the signature @elekna, Elena mixes traditional techniques such as watercolours and Chinese ink with digital collage to illustrate untraditional imaginary faces.
I hope you enjoy each and every day of a 2023 that promises to be one to remember”.

January. Warm and comfortable with Diwan.
