Transitient Madness

A performance expressing the creative process behind Zero, the new knitted fabric developed for Sancal by Marie-Louise Rosholm.

Betti has been driven to a state of transient madness by her obsession to create. Her latest fixation is knit. Luca Nichetto’s Next Stop sofa cushions with Marie-Louise Rosholm’s Zero fabric provide her with a knitted padded room: her natural habitat.

In this new reality she moves between different two emotional states represented by the colours red and blue. Like Ariadne, she follows the thread of life to the centre of the labyrinth where she finds herself before setting off on a new path. Unwinding a ball of wool purifies her spirit, guiding her towards the origin of creation. The world morphs around her, and yet she feels no fear, reminding us that courage is required to acquire profound knowledge, to step outside one’s comfort zone.

With this installation, Sancal Estudio reflects on the way it experiences the creative process, plagued with tos and fros, moments of ecstasy and profound insecurity. Esther and Elena Castaño-Lopez both find that start and finish of a project are flashes of pure madness. Emotions run high as ideas that seem perfect at the start of the day are discarded by the afternoon. Betti Rollo’s intervention symbolises this creative destruction.
